In 2026 I was lucky enough to stay right on the beautiful shoreline of Bertraghboy Bay in Connemara, Co Galway

This small boat, just lying on the shore a few metres from where we were staying, intrigued me. It didn’t look like it would be going out any time soon, but equally seemed still up for an adventure.

I concluded that perhaps it’s just resting a while here, awaiting what happens next - as we so often find ourselves.

Could you get a better place for coffee than this?

I love to sit here, courtesy of the Bay Coffee Company in Brixham, looking out over the harbour.

Oh, and in the winter they do the best hot chocolates!

Another painting from my Irish Landscapes series, from my trip to Connemara in 2026.

I was drawn to the way the light fell on these rocks. Looking up the river it really seemed like they were stepping stones - but to where?

There’s something inexplicably beautiful that happens at first light. On the shoreline of Bertraghboy Bay in the heart of Connemara, that first half hour of daylight hits different.

The profound peace, the isolation, that feeling of being alone in a wild and ancient place.

It’s special in a very unique and deep way.

When I paint, I’m in a world of my own. Whether en plein air in a private garden, or tucked away in my studio, there’s a special kind of solitude that happens when it’s just me, the canvas and the passing of time.

I often find myself drawn to capturing the things I feel might otherwise go unnoticed. The quiet workhorses of life, like a faithful chair, a battered old gate or a weathered pot, illuminated by a fleeting shaft of light or casting an exquisite shadow across the room.

It seems right somehow to honour the objects and moments of life that truly shape our human experience. We may not always have the awareness to see them as we go about our busy lives but they nevertheless exist. We feel these moments without really knowing it. It’s that awareness that I love to express in my work.
